It is noted paper is generally confined to experience acquired in vessels owned by British and Commonwealth Shipping Co Ltd and propelled by Sulzer RD76 or RD90 engines operating on heavy fuel; 6RD76 units are fitted in Clan Fergusson, Clan Macgillivray, etc, and twin screw 8RD90 installations in Southampton Castle and Good Hope Castle; design aspect of engines and operational experience are reported; some reflections are included on future of slow-running diesel engines with particular regard to supporting services for their operation and maintenance.
