Gas turbine powered Admiral William M. Callaghan roll-on, roll-off type 694 ft sea-going cargo vessel passed her sea trials with flying colors and shortly thereafter put to sea for maiden voyage to Europe; vessel exceeded design speed of 25 knots in trials and was notable for responsive performance from two Pratt and Whitney Aircraft FT4 marine versions of aircraft type gas turbines which provide propulsion power; vessel has 7000 ton capacity, range of 6000 mi at top speed, and can load heavy tanks, cargo trucks, trailers and other vehicles through side access ramps and from stern; it also has six hatches, features heavylift capacity of two 120 ton booms and conventional cargo handling gear.
