Conceived by Lykes Bros Steamship Co Inc, New Orleans, and designed in association with J.J.Henry Co Inc, these are float-on/float-off transoceanic cargo barge carriers with special cargo handling system designed to stow 38 barges on three decks and able to carry cargo deadweight of 21,483 tons on draft of 32 ft 6 in.; ships will be known as "Seabee" class after U S Navy battalions of same name but they will in fact be merchant ships although capable of standing in as military transports if required; it is reported as envisaged that two 18-cyl Fairbanks Morse diesel engines would be fitted, although steam turbine machinery was proposed initially.
