Investigation of behavior of ship when steered on straight course by helmsman whose steering ability is known; K- and T-figures (turning ability, time constant) from equation of motion, as presented by Nomoto, were determined by means of model experiments for cargo liner and tanker, for different rudder areas and speeds; steering ability of human operator was also studied; analysis takes into account both ship response and response of helmsman; maneuverability on straight course of these combined responses is discussed considering influences of rudder area, hull form and ship size.
