Investigation of both airborne and structureborne sound transmission on board 14,000 ton dw shelterdeck motor ship showed typical ship noise in cabins did not originate from engineroom airborne noise; as mathematical models for sound radiation by decks and bulkheads did not explain experimental facts satisfactorily and further experiments on board were impossible, 1 to 10 scale model was built; it consists of one side of casing with two adjacent decks, stiffeners, deck beams, etc, made from steel plate, with model cabin between decks; agreement between model and prototype results is satisfactory.
