Paper argues and examines evidence that large upward revision of allowable microbial load per spacecraft is now possible; it falls into four categories -- release, survival, dissemination, and growth of terrestrial microbial contaminants on Mars; sterilization standards adopted by Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) of International Council of Scientific Unions, and interaction with Soviet space program are considered.
