Theory is important tool for design of aerodynamic shapes, flight paths for aircraft and spacecraft, guidance and control logic (deterministic and stochastic), and data processing logic; examples of applications include minimum drag nose shapes in hypersonic flow, minimum fuel low-thrust orbit transfer from Earth to Mars, minimum time climb path for supersonic interceptor, minimum fuel climb paths for supersonic airplane, explicit guidance for minimum fuel horizontal translation for spacecraft, explicit guidance for minimum time interception for spacecraft, and perturbation guidance for minimum energy loss of re-entry vehicle, etc.
