Concept of Automated Biological Laboratory (ABL), designed to perform automatic survey of environment for evidence of life, past and present; working under control of internal computer with self-adaptive programs, its operation can be augmented from Earth by command signals; ABL landed payload includes scientific equipment and experiments, power supply, communications equipment, environmental control system, and other subsystems necessary for self sustaining operation on Mars for 2 yr; description of major elements, missions and sampling at landing site and sampling at remote sites.
