Flight of hypersonic vehicles in atmosphere can result in structrual temperatures which exceed 2000 C; these temperatures, in combination with chemical constituents of surrounding atmosphere, result in serious changes to exposed materials which can downgrade or destroy them, making them useless for structural applications unless they are properly protected; particular concern of this paper is to discuss background for highly demanding requirements for protection of these materials; included are effect of mission requirements, design concepts, and manufacturing technology.
