Successful fixed-point, variable word length simulations of onboard orbit determination have been performed using horizon scanner as basic sensor; seemingly difficult scaling problems associated with such operations have been overcome using small number of carefully chosen independent scale factors; numerical errors have been reduced by judicious selection and manipulation of form of system equations; it was found that word lengths as low as 22 bits permitted orbit determination for three orbits with errors that were only slightly larger than those obtained using double-precision floating-point computation.
