Considerations which enter into choice of specific spacecraft propulsion system for particular application are presented; environment and its influence on propulsion requirements, characteristics of several propellant combinations and example of typical mission; it is concluded that state of art of propulsion technology must advance on broad front in time period prior to project definition to provide technological options which allow significant optimization of complete project propulsion system.
