Use of clustered parachutes presents particular problem in spacecraft recovery systems because of wide variation in individual parachute peak loads which occur during opening sequence; nonuniform opening of Ringsail parachutes in cluster was observed and analyzed; major factors affecting nonuniform opening and variations between individual parachute peak loads were identified; method is presented for predicting peak disreef loads for individual parachutes in cluster using opening-shock-factor data, together with other measured operational characteristics of parachute and its associated hardware.
