Forces applied to large aerospace vehicle to change attitude or velocity of vehicle will often excite significant undesirable vibration; some typical thrust patterns are examined which accomplish desired maneuver and also are constrained to leave some vibratory modes unexcited at conclusion of maneuver; added cost in terms of time for maneuver, complexity of thrust pattern, and fuel or total control effort is examined for optimal maneuvers of this type; techniques for interpreting solutions to these problems in terms of multiple phase plane plots are given.
