Equation is derived relating average speed on journey in central urban area to average values of flow of traffic, width of road, number of controlled intersections per mile and proportion of green time; it is based on observations of traffic in central London and studies of delay at traffic signals; results show that increase in number of intersections per mile produces approximately same reduction in journey speed at any level of traffic flow; simple approximation to formula gives flow in terms of journey speed and is applicable to towns similar to central London.
