Summary of historical backgrounds of early submarines and trends which have occurred in last 40 yr in submarine design, in particular, current trends in deep-diving submarine vehicles towards increased capability for accomplishing "real life" work tasks; Beaver Mark IV, typical example of underseas "work boat", has been conceived to perform number of work and research tasks; tabulation of Beaver characteristics; description of component and hardware features which are significant in developing deep-diving work vehicles; essential characteristics, such as viewing, illumination, manipulators, interchangeable tools, capability of transferring men to underseas habitats at normal atmospheric pressures, and support of diver operations.
