Method developed by Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS) based on land use, for estimating and forecasting internal person trip destinations; theoretically, trips were forecast from trip rates to six generalized land uses -- residential, manufacturing, commercial, transportation, public buildings, and public open space; alternative method was for trip purpose; it was concluded that trip to station should be combined with purpose of driver; reliable estimating methods for shopping trips were not derived; qualitative measure of retail activity is needed; retail sales appear to be logical independent variable from which to estimate trips.
