Two main engines on Ellena Hicks are Electro-Motive 1950 hp model 12-645-E5 turbocharged marine diesels with rated speed of 800 rpm; each diesel is connected to Falk model 24MR-40 reduction and reversing gear with 40 in. clutches; gear ratio is 4.269 to 1, to turn propellers at 187 rpm with engines turning at rated speed; 4-blade propellers are 10 ft in diam, carried on 12 in. diam shafts; key to operations is notched bulk cargo barge, 420 ft long by 80 ft wide and drawing 25 ft 5 in. fully loaded, with power in specially designed 120 ft long tug, its twin screws driven by pair of 12 cyl diesels; feature is separation of propulsion unit from cargo-carrying vessel.
