In tests described, medium viscosity, solvent treated, mineral oil, with addition of 1% methyl dichlorstearate, was used; all tests were made on ground spur gears; results show that case hardened gears can be loaded to higher specific loads than direct hardened medium carbon steel gears, even when latter are surface hardened by cyaniding or nitriding.
