Use of micarta in building and repairing ships; it consists of layers of fibrous material impregnated with synthetic resins, hot pressed into dense material with high mechanical strength; characteristics of material are varied by different combinations of filler and resin, but for mechanical applications in marine work fabric base micarta with sufficient resin to obtain low moisture absorption is ideal; for electrical insulation, paper base micarta is generally used because of higher dielectric strength.
