Attempt made to define maximum re-entry performance required of lifting re-entry vehicle, within limits imposed by maximum re-entry velocity of 36,000 fps; corresponding thermal environments established provide basis for examination of various thermal protection system concepts; systems which are believed sufficiently promising to justify further development are shown.
