Types of drive pinion mounting used in automotive rear axles are overhung pinion and straddle mounted pinion; once basic drive gear parameters have been determined, mounting for these gears must be designed; gears must be held in proper mesh under various load conditions experienced in axle to minimize gear misalignment and resulting noise and fatigue problems in gears and bearings; design consideration for mounting components (carrier, case, bearings, etc) and tests required are presented.
