Time lags and wheel locking are main problems of braking systems for automotive (particularly commercial) vehicles; research continues on improvements of brake safety on solo as well as articulated vehicles; exhaust brake, recently developed, provides completely independent form of vehicle retardation through transmission leaving friction brakes available for emergency.
