Brake lining and brake drum considered as mating pair for optimum performance; some characteristics of brake linings, interrelationship of brake drum, and combined effect on certain aspects of brake performance are discussed; temperature, rubbing speed, unit pressure, and mating surface material are factors affecting coefficient of friction of lining; brake maintenance also affects operation of lining as well as entire brake system; by understanding various properties of linings and drums and concept of mating pairs, certain compromises can be reached which offer optimum performance for specific set of operating conditions.
