Explanation of derivation of empirical formulas for estimating stresses in various parts of marine diesel engine crankshaft; for purpose, 151 model shafts were tested for bending and 22 for torsion; strain gage measurements were then taken from actual shafts under service conditions, and it was found that there was good accord between computed results and service measurements; it is pointed out that additional stress due to torsional and axial vibrations still poses problem.
