Assessment of existing experimental data bearing on problems of propelling railway vehicles; study of linear induction motors with current in horizontal or vertical conducting plate (rotor) and traveling polyphase winding in laminated iron block (stator); application is limited on existing British Railways due to loading gage restrictions; advantages include absence of sliding electric contacts, reduction of motor weight and cost; results of tests are described, as well as possibility of using linear motors for hovertrains, passenger railroad car door motors, and switch motors.
