Study of spatial pattern of traffic flows between areas in North America due to particular nature of piggyback operations in comparison to those of regular railroad freight service and intercity highway trucking; operations are also affecting patterns of interaction within cities as well as between cities and brings with it its own pattern of intangible spatial features such as rate structures and delivery times; term "TOFC" used in article and maps refers to specialized concept of rail-motor carrier coordination involved in placing motor truck trailers on railroad flatcars for line haul movement, with pickup and delivery of trailer being performed "on ground" by truck tractor units.
