Military tactics of vertical envelopment require transport of 8000 lb of payload to radius of 100 nautical mi at speed of 150 knots; aircraft should be able to hover at 6000 ft on standard day and with one engine inoperative maintain level flight in turbulent air; helicopter should be readily convertible to carry cargo or troops; CH-53A helicopter, developed by Sikorsky Aircraft, meets these requirements; additional design constraints include emergency water landing, rear loading, self-contained navigation system and weight and dimensions compatible with aircraft carriers; aspects involved in design and development; handling qualities and performance.
