Paper examines factors involved in first and second collisions with emphasis on effect of first collision crush characteristics on occupants' safety in second collision; tests carried out with European and American models showed that automobiles tested to date absorb energy during crush of front ends in approximately same manner and to approximately same degree; forces involved in energy absorption and factors involved in collision sequence; role of engine and interior design.
