Studies on use of existing service areas, highway travel characteristics, demand for service facilities, provision of service facilities; service facilities are subjected to extreme variations in use; only 'nominal' catering provision is necessary for one-fifth of hours of year; hot and cold drinks and limited light snacks could be provided by using automats only; at other extreme it is suggested that quick-service stand-up bar should be provided during summer periods to act as `safety valve' when more traditional services become overcrowded.
