Development of inland water transport, navigation canals, and modernization of vessels and terminal facilities; navigable channels have length of 3000 and 5000 mi respectively in low water season and high water period; lands lying below 25 ft contour are generally suitable for being served by perennial navigation; cyclones, stormsurges and waves in monsoon hinder navigation in lower delta; instability of river banks, high range of fluctuation of water levels, bad shoals at crossings and siltation have been main hindrances to development of waterways and inland harbors.
