Summary of operating experience of several Australian railroads from first unit of 1951; toward end of 1956 fleet of steam locomotives owned and operated by Australia's seven railroad systems stood at 3366 units, plus 242 new diesels still working to establish reputation, particularly for efficiency and low-cost operation; by June 30 1966, steam fleet had been reduced by more than 50% to only 1579 units; largest diesel operator in Australia, New South Wales GR, will have 348 units in service when those on order are delivered.
