Paper describes American railroad diesel locomotive and modern oils and greases which contribute to its efficiency; emphasis is on high horsepower road freight locomotives; examples of engine types are illustrated and their lubricating oil requirements considered; success of new highly dispersant railway diesel oils has depended on development and availability of dispersants which are effective at both normal operating and reduced temperatures; lubrication of turbocharger bearings and clutches; components of diesel-electric and diesel-hydraulic locomotives; future trends.
