Assessment of state of development and of prospects of discontinuous fiber reinforced materials shows that they seem to be in need of basic better understanding as material for optimization purposes and of availability in pilot plant quantities for design evaluation; early applications may be in conjunction with glass-reinforced plastics as secondary fiber to increase overall composite modulus and to improve inter-laminar shear strength of filament-wound composites; future applications may include supersonic transport structures, jet and turbine engines, etc.
