Explanation of method for determining probable output of simple expansion steam locomotives as measured by power available at coupling between locomotive and train; conclusion reached that it is best to separate entirely boiler and engine performance and estimate locomotive resistance by formulas which include engine friction and rolling and air resistances; means proposed for estimating pulling power throughout usual operating speeds obtaining in passenger or freight service.
