Efforts made during IGY to extend knowledge of fine structure of ionosphere, and, in particular, to study variations at different latitudes and for different solar conditions such as rocket research program at Fort Churchill, Canada, and experiments made in USSR with geophysical rockets; information obtained and techniques employed; investigations undertaken by US Naval Research Laboratory in its rocket program to study solar spectrum in ultraviolet above absorbing atmosphere.
