Tie which is bored obtains better penetration with creosote and is fully protected against decay; no ap-preciable effect is seen to be made by boring upon spike holding power of ties, and tests on ordinary spikes, which are driven into ties bored 13 mm. in diam. and 70 mm. in depth, have shown good results; performance of screw and improved spikes.
