Discussion directed toward power plants for sophisticated multipurpose strike aircraft, with reference to optimum use of lift/ thrust engine concept in its extended form, where extra thrust is obtained by burning fuel in bypass air stream prior to its discharge from nozzles; review of thermodynamic characteristics required of engines for future "vectored thrust", low level, strike aircraft having supersonic capability; relative merits of extreme forms of power plant are discussed from engine and power plant designer's viewpoint.
