Substitution of air breathing engines in space vehicles during boost phase when there is air for them to breath is considered and their suitability as space booster power units examined; status and potential of engines; flight environment; performance of ram jet with speed capability above 4 to 15 Mach and their use as power units for long range, high speed, winged aircraft; attractiveness of air breathing boost engines compared with rockets is in their potentially high fuel specific impulse; outline of booster studies; applicability.
