Aerodynamic performance is prime factor in selection of inlet for particular application; other considerations, such as inlet weight, controllability, complexity, and cooling requirements; most desirable mechanical structural features are embodied by fixed geometry inlet type, whereas optimum performance potential is demonstrated by variable geometry type; both have place in mission spectrum envisioned for air breathing propulsion systems.
