Airport, designated LAX, opened June 1961, averaged more than 1000 flights/day on 22 scheduled airlines; terminal occupies 265 acres of 3000-acre airport site and features decentralized ticketing and satellite units; satellite is elongated oval-shaped building, able to service 10 jet transports simultaneously; features of Theme Building; wherever possible, facilities were automated; handling of baggage; electronically controlled system of pipe lines, storage tanks, etc, to move aviation fuels to air liners.
