Direct route ("Vogelfluglinie") between Hamburg and Copenhagen will be opened in May of 1963; it will involve sea crossing of only 18.5 km in place of present 69 km; key structure of project is combined road and railway bridge across 1350-m wide sound between Holstein coast and island of Fehmarn; bridge comprises 7 spans of 102 m, and one span of 240 m over shipping channel; this span is "basket handle" tied arch with orthotropic deck and inclined suspenders; ferry terminal at Puttgarden on Fehmarn is also described.
