New aerial tramway rising 5873 ft over difficult terrain in Chino Canyon, near Palm Springs, Calif, is reputed to be longest single lift passenger tramway, and its 2 cabins with capacity for 80 passengers and one conductor will be among largest in world; project consists essentially of 4 mi of paved 2-lane approach road, 5 steel towers to support 2 1/2 mi long cables, 2 concrete anchorage structures and 2 large terminal buildings; helicopters were used to aid transportation of men, equipment and materials to 4 upper towers and mountain station; cable erection and tramway operation described.
