Although called ferries, first 3 big vessels of State of Alaska fleet fit within definition of liners; they will operate over nearly 500-mi route between Prince Ruport, BC, and Haines, Alaska; Malaspina will be followed by sister ships Taku and Matanuska; length oa 352 ft, extreme breadth over guards 73 ft 7 1/2 in., depth molded to main deck 23 ft 6 in., design load draft 15 ft, displacement at load draft 3585 tons; 500 passengers can be carried; 2 Enterprise diesel engines are each rated 4062 hp continuously at 375 engine rpm; plan.
