Orders were placed with Caledon Shipbldg and Eng Co for 3 double-ended end-loaders, but arranged as interim measure to use existing side-loading Woolwich pontoons, pending completion of new terminals; they will replace 4 paddle steamers for Woolwich Free Ferry, operated by London County Council; length oa 185 ft 7 in., maximum breadth 62 ft 7 in., load draft 6 ft, gross 880 tons, vehicle deck space about 6000 sq ft; 2 500-hp Mirrlees-National diesel engines are used.
