Experiments on interaction of transversely impinging 2-dimensional jet flows, important in reduction of noise due to jet exhaust from aircraft and rockets, cooling of re-entry vehicles, mixing of liquid propellants in rocket engines, etc, were performed in which l-p control jet flow interacted with h-p power jet flow; shadowgraphs of power jet alone, and corresponding interacting jet flows, recorded; with addition of only small percent control jet flow, normal shock front of highly underexpanded power jet flow changed to oblique shock structure and maximum recovery stagnation pressures were proportionally much higher; mechanism for behavior of normal shock proposed.
