After reviewing what steam engine can do, author proceeds to examine case for Diesel engine; fundamentally greater heat drop of Diesel cycle is reason for its greatly improved thermal efficiency; more careful lubrication which it entails limits improvement somewhat, though fuel consumption is still very much lower; reviews principal features of semi-Diesel and Diesel engines.
