Conventional accelerometer orientations obtain only portion of system performance available from accelerometers; use of optimum nonorthogonal and redundant accelerometer orientations can result in significantly improved performance; paper develops general formulation of accelerometer orientation optimization problem, presents solution for special cases, and results of examples to demonstrate potential of non-conventional orientations.
