Accurate definition of severity of planetary entry problem has been made difficult by complexity of performing experiments in this environment; study applies new technique to heat-transfer measurements in shock tube at simulated flight velocities up to 50,000 fps using IR heat-transfer gage which has been adapted to this experiment; difficulties of adapting gage to test requirements are described, as well as calibration of IR cell output and response time characteristics of measuring system.
