There are three basic approaches to optimizing flight profiles, cut-and-try, point-performance, and integral-performance each of which are explained; flight profile and its three segments, climb, cruise, and descent, and its optimization, applied to fighter aircraft, supersonic transports, and missiles and spacecraft are considered with respect to optimization problems which occur during design of these vehicles; two of these problems, namely, minimum-time and maximum altitude, were selected for comparing point-performance and integral performance evaluation methods and results.
