Optimal control of VTOL aircraft; aim of study is to determine variations of magnitude and direction of thrust necessary for most economical or most rapid ascent to given altitude, as well as to reach prescribed horizontal velocity; procedure derived from principle of maximum and using generalized concept of control variable is given; results yield curves constituting optimum trajectory and indicate computational procedure for their determination.
